64 Strong Regions

Please also visit our comparison of the current G8x8 with the first one of 2008

This website collects information about the development of the G8x8 territories. These are the eight most productive states, provinces, prefectures, laender, oblasts, or other first-level administrative regions within the eight top GDP countries of the world. For country comparison, we use GDP data of the World Bank, based on US dollars. For comparison within each country, we use GDP data of the national statistics offices, based on the national currencies. There is some fluctuation within the G8x8 from year to year. For the purpose of continuity, we update the composition of G8x8 only once every eight years. Our first G8x8 chessboard was compiled in 2008, the current one is based on 2016 data, and we expect to update again in 2024.

Why do we cut off countries and territories at eight? Why for a total of 64 territories? Jesus recounted eight blessings, the beatitudes, in the Sermon on the Mount. Eight angels carry the throne of Allah in heaven. In Buddhism, the Noble Eightfold Path leads to liberation from the painful cycle of rebirth. And eight is the lucky number in Chinese, standing for prosperity (发财).

Sixty-four is the square of 8, the cube of 4, and the sixth power of 2. It is the smallest number with exactly seven divisors. It is the lowest positive power of two that is adjacent to neither a Mersenne prime nor a Fermat prime. 64 is the sum of Euler’s totient function for the first fourteen integers. It is also a dodecagonal number and a centered triangular number. 64 is also the first whole number that is both a perfect square and a perfect cube. Since it is possible to find sequences of 64 consecutive integers such that each inner member shares a factor with either the first or the last member, 64 is an Erdős–Woods number. In base 10, no integer added up to its own digits yields 64, hence it is a self number. 64 is a superperfect number—a number such that σ(σ(n)) = 2n. 64 is the index of Graham’s number. For more info, see Wikipedia on number 64.

A chess board has 64 squares. The Beatles wrote and produced the song “When I’m 64”. It is also the number of sexual positions in the Kama Sutra. And 64 is the number of hexagrams in the Yijing (also known as I Ching, in Chinese 易经), the ancient Chinese “Book of Changes”. See Wikipedia on the I Ching hexagrams.
